This project was the basis for a larger studio project studying a downtown San Luis Obispo site. I explored abstractions of images taken on site, and found compositional hierarchies within them: major and minor axes, empty space, and areas of lightness and darkness. Finally, I turned to material studies to see how the compositions I created would react when turned into filters for light; for this, I studied different materials, such as chipboard, vellum, and bass wood. The final light filter is made from pine wood and subtly introduces light through joints and openings placed to keep a continuous eye movement across the piece.
