fictive boundaries
summer 2023
studio behrens, DIS Copenhagen
This project, located on the site of Provestenen Syd in Copenhagen, examines the interaction between the fictive realm and architecture. Literature is a means of connecting to others past and present and a way of exploring your own inner world. The boundary between outer and inner world is explored in this project, and what happens at the loss of that boundary. Literature acts as a bridge between someone's inner world and your own. How do you create an architecture that fosters imaginative discoveries of realities ofther than what is in front of you? How can the space you are in aid in both grounding you in the present, but open you up to exploring the field of your inner world?

The effect of the on inner world is made visible in the structure - the building documents the effects of the site and brutality of the elements, like a seashell eroding in the wind. It has the feeling of something discovered, a piece of the landscape. In this way, it is an analogy and an extension of the self, representing how time can shape the boundaries of the inner world. The building's form acts as a way to frame the landscape, a window for looking out at the same time as looking in.
concept
Using point cloud data, a series of initial collages established the themes I wanted to explore after visiting the site. Heavily inspired by the work of Rilke, I examined the concept of the "weltinnenraum", the world/inner space.

a new vision
As a forgotten site near a largely industrial area, I wanted to maintain it as a place of escape from the city. What might visitors experience while wandering across a vast expanse, where the mind can roam free?

precedents
Sourced from Copenhagen's historic and urban context, biomimetic forms, and the artworks of Georgia O'Keeffe and Danish Romantics, I was drawn to the bone-like form of shells, a recurring theme in O'Keeffe's work as well.
