After studying and diagramming Bittencourt Residence designed by Vilanova Artigas, we were tasked with designing an addition to the precedent to increase occupancy. I diagrammed exisiting relationships between interior and exterior, private and public, and circulation. Without a doubt one of my favorite projects, I wanted to honor the existing relationships within the house while also providing a place that juxtaposes and highlights the unique aspects of Bittencourt Residence. My guest house design therefore inverts the public-private relationship by turning interior, intimate spaces outwards. Within the privacy of the garden space, the guest house can blur the boundaries between inside and out, making a small dwelling expansive.
